"When are you chatting with the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated admirers have publicly begged for the honor.

It's clear something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos often show them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to form a group."

"Therefore anyone gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words track departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent confidence demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

However the sister act will always be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
