The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
