The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
