Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
