The musician donates £25,000 cash award to independent music venues

Sam Fender was awarded the prestigious award recently in Newcastle

The star has donated the complete sum of his £25k honor winnings to the trust for venues, which works to protect the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

He was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his new release People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, major artists like Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

He also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to assist 38 local spots across Britain.

The donation helped spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties arising from flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted funding support in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that directly benefitted performers and audiences.

"The notion that money from shows in major spaces helps the smaller venues, where it all starts for performers like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

The musician is far from the only musician to contribute his award prize money to charitable organizations.

In Pulp earned the prize in the mid-90s for their album their work, vocalist Jarvis Cocker declared that the group would donate their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, artist the artist divided her award between a few charities, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I donated a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their winnings to the local youth club that supported their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients M People contributed their award to a charity for MS after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated artist Small. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had rescued several small stages in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in that location were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
